Juniperus virginiana (weed) L. - (eastern red cedar)
This tree is found in many parts of eastern and central North America. It can lead to the deterioration of prairie habitats, where it has been previously naturally controlled by periodic wildfires. The term "native invader" has been used to describe its early arrival in cleared and disturbed land. However, in some areas it is deliberately planted, e.g. for shelterbelts.
Apart from suppressing other plants it also increases the risk of fire in the invaded area. The tree is long-lived and the age of some trees have been estimated at more than 900 years. It normally grows to a height of 5-20 m.
