Ips cembrae Heer - (eight-spined larch bark beetle or large larch bark beetle)

Larch is the main host tree of this bark beetle which is found in Europe and northern Asia. It can be a serious pest of larch in Europe and breeds in weakened and healthy trees, as well as in felled logs. Local outbreaks have been recorded.

Males enter the trees first and are then joined by females. Larch trees of all ages are attacked and infestations start at the bottom and spreads to the top of the trees. Adults of I. cembrae are around 5 mm long and very similar to Ips subelongatus.
