Holcus lanatus (weed) L. - (common velvetgrass)

This grass is native to Europe and Asia. It has been introduced into other regions as a forage grass and has become invasive in some habitats, e.g. in moist coastal areas of North America. It competes with and replaces native grasses and other plants. It has been reported to produce more than 200,000 seeds per plant, which can germinate shortly after landing on moist soil.

The main characteristics of the plant are the purplish panicles and veins of the sheaths, the lack of a rhizome and the soft hairs on the leaves and stems.
