Exorista bombycis (Louis 1880) - (Indian silkworm ujifly)
This species of tachnid flies, is one of several parasitoids that are harmful to silkworm cultures in Asia. It is mainly found in India, where it is a problem in the sericulture industry. The average economic losses in India are estimated at 10-15% and during outbreaks they can exceed 50%.
See also the page on Exorista sorbillans, another silkworm parasitoid. Exorista sorbillans has been (or is) often regarded as a synonym of Exorista bombycis, but is here treated as a separate species, see Narayanaswamy & Govindan (2000) for a review of E. bombycis and a discussion on this synonymy.
