Pathogenicity of Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae isolates against larvae of the polyphagous pest Helicoverpa armigera
Entomologia Generalis 38 (3), 225-242
Abstract: We aimed at the screening the entomo-pathogenicity of 22 isolates of Beauveria bassiana sensu lato (s.l.) and Metarhizium anisopliae s.l. (Ascomycota: Hypocreales), isolated from soils of different origin and insect cadavers. All isolates were screened against 2nd instar larvae of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) at two spore concentrations. Four isolates of B. bassiana and one of M. anisopliae exhibited >80% and >75% larval mortality, respectively. Overall, a higher number of sporulating moth cadavers were observed when inoculated with higher concentrations compared to lower ones. Five selected fungal isolates were evaluated at four different concentrations against 2nd and 4th instars larvae causing, 7 days after the treatment, 72.92–100% and 65.24–93.96% mortality, respectively. This study showed the fungal conidia concentration dependent pathogenicity of several B. bassiana, and M. anisopliae isolates on larvae of the harmful pest H. armigera.
