Elaviroid (genus)
This genus of viroids includes currently only the type species, Eggplant latent viroid (ELVd). It belongs to the family Avsunviroidae whose members multiply in the chloroplasts of infected cells and lack a central conserved region in their RNA structure, but during replication are able to self-cleave through hammerhead ribozymes. Like other viroids they consist of circular single stranded RNA. Compared the other two genera of the Avsunviroidae, ELVd shows properties of the Avsunviroid genus as well as the Pelamoviroid genus. ELVd causes symptomless infections in eggplant seedlings.
