Cytospora punicae Sacc. 1878

This fungus has been reported from parts of North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. It causes trunk canker, dieback, chlorosis and fruit rot on pomegranate trees (Punica granatum). The cankers have been described as sunken, 5-30 cm long, with the bark torn open, exposing a reddish-brown sapwood (Samouel & Kanetis, 2016). The disease can result in tree death if the canker girdles the trunk.

The conidia are hyaline, aseptate, elongated with rounded ends and a size of around 4.5-5 x 1.5 µm.
