Coquillettidia Dyar, 1905
This genus contains around 60 species of mosquitoes, several of which bite humans and can be serious nuisance pests. Some are known to transmit arboviruses. The larvae develop while staying attached to the roots of aquatic plants. They pierce the air cells of these roots to obtain oxygen and their siphon is specifically adapted for this life style.
The genus is closely related to Mansonia in biology and morphology. The adults are typically rather large and yellowish brown. Distinguishing characters include:
• the absence of prespiracular and postspiracular setae,
• a unicoloured scutum,
• a prominent light band on the proboscis, and
• a mixture of light and dark scales on the wings and the palps.
