Mansonia Blanchard, 1901
This genus of mosquitoes is widely distributed, mainly in tropical regions. Several species are important pest species like Mansonia uniformis (in Asia, Africa and Australia) or Mansonia titillans in the Americas. Several species are also considered vectors of filariasis or virus diseases.
They breed in water pools occupied by certain aquatic plants. Special modifications of their siphons enable them to attach themselves to the roots of these plants and obtain oxygen from the roots.
Mansonia species are medium sized. The taxonomic characters of the genus include: The tip of the abdomen in females is not pointed and has hook-like setae. The femora and tibiae of the legs have white bands and the wings are speckled with broad scales, coloured light and dark.
Type species: Mansonia titillans
