Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (weed pathogen) (Penz. 1882) Penz. & Sacc. 1884

This species name has been used for many forms of plant pathogens. However, taxonomic studies have shown that it is a complex of different species (see the plant pathogenic strains of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides for details). Certain strains of this fungus are used or being investigated as biocontrol agents of weeds and several are commercially produced.

  • Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f.sp. aeschynomene - is a disease of northern jointvetch (Aeschynomene virginica)
  • Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f.sp. clidemiae - has been released in Hawaii against the weed Koster's curse (Clidemia hirta)
  • Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f. sp. cuscutae - is used in China against dodder
  • Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f.sp. malvae - is an isolate causing a disease of mallow which is commercially produced as a bioherbicide and has been now reclassified as Colletotrichum orbiculare
  • Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f.sp. miconiae - infects the weed Miconia calvescens
  • Colletotrichum gloeosporioides f.sp. salsolae - infects the weed Salsola tragus
