Miconia calvescens (weed) DC. - (velvet tree)
This plant is native to the rain forests of tropical and subtropical Central and South America from Mexico to northern Argentina. It has been often introduced as an ornamental into other countries and has become established in several Pacific islands, as well as in Australia and Sri Lanka.
In Hawaii and French Polynesia it has invaded most islands and is considered one of the most aggressive environmental weeds. It covers other plants with its broad leaves and replaces native species. Eradication is very difficult and in Hawaii control efforts in the year 2000 alone have cost more than $1 million.
