Cecidophyopsis psilaspis (Nalepa, 1895) - (yew big bud mite)

This gall mite is found in Europe and has been also reported from western Canada (e.g. see Mitchell et al., 1997). It infests the buds of yew trees, in Europe mainly Taxus baccata and in Canada Taxus brevifolia. The infested buds swell, do not develop and die off or produce distorted needles. The damage can be severe in Canada.

The mite overwinters in the buds and disperses in spring. Adult mites have a length of 0.15-0.20 mm and are brownish when fully grown.
