Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830
This is a common and widely distributed species of blowfly, especially in temperate regions. It infests dried fish and attacks stored animal products. C. vicina also breeds in animal carcasses and has been occasionally reported as a cause of myiasis. Because of its common occurrence in houses, it is further an important disease vector.
Calliphora vicina maggots can be used in wound debridement therapy. This treatment has been licensed in some countries and is used in North America and Europe. The maggots are reared in the laboratory from eggs that have been sterilised (e.g. see Dallavecchia et al., 2019).
The adults are around 10 mm long, with a greyish and metallic blue colouration. The metallic blue colour is more prominent on the abdomen. The sides of the head are orange-brown.
