Biscogniauxia nummularia (Bull.) Kuntze (1891)
This fungus causes yellowing, leaf drop, cankers, wood decay and death of beech trees. The most characteristic symptom is the appearance of elongated, blackish bark lesions on the trunk and branches (charcoal canker). The fungus has been uncommon in Europe, but since 2003, serious outbreaks have been reported from Central Europe and parts of the Mediterranean (Patejuk et al., 2022).
The biology of the fungus remains poorly understood. It appears to be frequently present in symptomless trees as an endophyte, but can become an aggressive pathogen under certain conditions. Further, is has been more recently also reported on other forest trees, including conifers.
