Biscogniauxia Kuntze 1891

This genus contains more than 50 species of fungi. They typically grow on the bark of dead or living trees. The fruiting bodies are often black and the ascospores have a germination slit.

Many species are considered to be weak pathogens, infecting stressed trees. However, several species are aggressive tree pathogens like Biscogniauxia mediterranea which causes charcoal disease on oak trees. Saprophytic or endophytic life styles have been also described and a number of species appear to switch between these different forms during their life cycle.
