Avena sterilis (weed) L. - (winter wild oat, sterile oat)

This grass is native to the Mediterranean region and parts of western Asia, but has spread to various other regions. It is an important weed in cereals like wheat or barley, and can also affect other crops. Resistance to herbicides is common.

The plant grows to a height of around 80 cm, rarely above 1 m. Three subspecies have been described. Avena sterilis subsp. ludoviciana is often regarded as a separate species.
