Aspiviridae - Ophiovirus

The viruses in the plant virus family Aspiviridae and its only genus Ophiovirus are similar to the 'Citrus psorosis virus' which has been assigned to Ophiovirus citri. Several viruses from the genus Ophiovirus cause important crop diseases like citrus psorosis or the big-vein disease of lettuce, caused by the 'Mirafiori lettuce big-vein virus' (assigned to Ophiovirus mirafioriense).

The viruses consist of highly flexuous, fine filaments, encapsidating 3 or 4 negative sensed ssRNAs with a total length of araound 12 kb. The flexuous virions are about 3nm in diameter, at least 760 nm long and form open circles which are probably coiled.
