Armillaria cepistipes Velenovsky 1920
This fungus is common in Europe and has been also recorded from North America and eastern Asia. It is mainly saprotrophic, however it is also regarded as a weak pathogen of various forest trees, attacking stressed and weakened trees (e.g. Prospero et al., 2004).
The fruiting bodies are very similar to those of Armillaria gallica with minor differences in their morphology. Identification by DNA analysis is therefore more reliable. While A. gallica is usually found in oak-dominated forests, A. cepistipes is more common in beech forests. In addition, A. cepistipes is often associated with spruce trees and can cause mortality of trees in secondary spruce stands (Antonín et al., 2009).
