Anopheles umbrosus (Theobald, 1903)
This mosquito is found in southern Asia from Bangladesh to Vietnam and is regarded as a malaria vector in several countries (e.g. Al-Amin et al., 2015). It bites humans, but has been more often collected outdoors than indoors (Bashar et al., 2012).
A. umbrosus has been associated with Java mouse-deer (Tragulus javanicus) in some areas, transmitting mouse deer malaria (Plasmodium traguli). It has been reported to breed in acid water of forest swamps and in brackish water around mangroves. Taxonomically, A. umbrosus is part of a group of closely related species which includes, for example Anopheles letifer.
