Anopheles sundaicus (Rodenwaldt, 1948)
This mosquito is found in parts of south-eastern Asia from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to southern China and to Indonesia in the south. It is an important malaria vector in some countries. A. sundaicus bites primarily cattle but also readily bites man indoors and outdoors. It mainly occurs in coastal areas and typically breeds in brackish water pools containing algae, including shrimp and fish farms.
A. sundaicus is part of complex of several closely related species that can be distinguished by DNA analysis. Apart from Anopheles epiroticus, the complex includes other not yet named species. The current taxonomy of A. sundaicus s.s. is based on a neotype from Sarawak, Malaysia (Linton et al., 2005).
