Anopheles nili (Theobald, 1904)

This mosquito is found in many parts of tropical Africa, especially in western and central countries. It is regarded as an important malaria vector in several areas. For example, is has been estimated to be responsible for 10% of the malaria transmissions in Cameroon (Antonio-Nkondjio et al., 2002). A. nili is highly anthropophilic, biting both outdoors during the evening and indoors during the night. It breeds along the edges of streams and rivers, often those with floating vegetation.

Taxonomically, A. nili is part of a complex of four closely related species which includes for example Anopheles carnevalei.
