Anopheles maculatus Theobald, 1901
This mosquito is found in southern Asia and is an important malaria vector in parts of India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. It bites mainly humans in the early hours of the night, and can be also associated with livestock. A. maculatus typically lives in hilly and open areas. It breeds in shallow pools of fresh water.
A. maculatus is part of a group of closely related species which includes, among others, Anopheles dravidicus, A. pseudowillmori, A. sawadwongporni, and A. willmori. The distribution of this group extends from western Asia (Pakistan, Afghanistan) to southern China and the Philippines.
