Anopheles calderoni Wilkerson, 1991
This mosquito is found in north-western parts of South America (e.g. in Peru and Colombia) and can be common in some areas. It is is morphologically very similar to Anopheles punctimacula. An. calderoni readily bites humans during the night and has been found infected with both Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax malaria agents. However, the Plasmodium infection rate appears to be low and has been determined as 1 per 1,000 specimens in one study (Orjuela et al., 2015). Small man-made pools were determined to be the most common breeding sites in Colombia.
An identification key for adult females is given in Sallum et al. (2020).
