Anopheles barbirostris van der Wulp, 1884
This mosquito is found in southern Asia from India to southern China, including central and western parts of Indonesia in the south. It is an important malaria vector in some parts of its distribution range, e.g. in Sulawesi and Timor (Indonesia). The hosts are mainly bovids, but it can also bite humans and can be collected indoors in some areas. It breeds in a variety of habitats like deep fresh water as in pools and springs, swamps or in rice fields.
A. barbirostris forms a species complex with more than 10 closely related species, including for example Anopheles campestris.
For a review of this species see Sinka et al. 2011.
