Amaranthaceae (weeds) - (amaranth family)

This is a large family containing plants which range in size from herbs to shrubs and even includes some small trees. The flowers are usually tiny and inconspicuous. The seeds may be durable, surviving for a number of years. Several genera contain important species of agricultural and environmental weeds. In addition, the pollen of some species can cause allergies.

The family includes those species which have been previously classified under the goosefoot family (Chenopodiaceae). This combination now ensures a monophyletic family.
