Alternanthera Forssk. - (joyweeds)
The genus is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions, containing around 100-200 species of terrestial, semi-aquatic and aquatic herbs or small shrubs. Most species are native to South America. Several are serious and invasive weeds like A. philoxeroides or A. ficoidea. Affected crops include maize, rice or soybeans and crop losses of up to 50% have been reported.
