Amalgaviridae - Amalgavirus

The viruses assigned to the family Amalgaviridae are double-stranded RNA viruses that infect plants. The family is related to both the Totiviridae and the Partitiviridae. Virus particles have not been described for any member. The genus Amalgavirus includes viruses similar to the 'southern tomato virus' which has been assigned to the species Amalgavirus lycopersici. They have a small monopartite genome, about 3.5 kilobases long with 2 overlapping ORFs. ORF1 encodes products with uncertain functions that show similarity to nucleocapsid proteins. ORF2 encodes an RNA polymerase.
