Amalgavirus lycopersici (STV)

Assigned virus:
southern tomato virus (STV)

STV was first found in North America, but is now known to be widely distributed. It has been detected in tomato plants showing symptoms of stunting, mottling, chlorosis, fruit discoloration and vein necrosis. However, it has been also found in asymptomatic plants. For example, surveys on different tomato fields in Spain found the virus to be widespread and common in various cultivars without expressing symptoms (Elvira-González et al., 2019). This suggested that the described symptoms may be due to mixed infections with other viruses or environmental stress of the infected plants. STV is transmitted by seed at rates higher than 70% whereas “horizontal” transmission by vectors is unknown.
