Alphanucleorhabdovirus maydis
Assigned virus:
• maize mosaic virus (MMV)
The maize mosaic virus was first discovered in Hawaii and is also found in tropical and subtropical parts of Africa, the Americas, and in India. The symptoms are characterized by stunting and long chlorotic lines on the leaves, running parallel to the veins along the whole leaf. While the disease incidence is often low, serious outbreaks with significant yield losses have been reported. The virus is transmitted by the corn delphacid, Peregrinus maidis, in a persistent-propagative manner.
MMV has bacilliform particles and a single, negative-sense RNA molecule, with a size of around 12-kb. The genome contains 6 genes, encoding the nucleoprotein, phosphoprotein, putative movement protein, matrix protein, glycoprotein, and polymerase protein.
