Alphabaculovirus helarmigerae (entomopathogen)

Assigned virus:
Helicoverpa armigera nucleopolyhedrovirus (HearNPV)

The Helicoverpa armigera nucleopolyhedrovirus is a single nucleocapsid nucleopolyhedrovirus and causes a lethal disease of the old world cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (previously Heliothis armigera). Some related Lepidoptera larvae can also become infected, but are less susceptible. The virus is commercially available. Compared to chemical insecticides, it has a slower speed of kill and older larvae are less susceptible. Attempts are under way to modify the virus using genetic engineering in order to overcome these disadvantages.
