Akanthomyces (for pest control) Lebert 1858

The genus Akanthomyces includes several species of entomopathogenic fungi that infect primarily Lepidoptera and Sternorrhyncha, but also include pathogens of other insect groups. Some have been described as antagonists of plant diseases (see Akanthomyces as antagonists). The members have been classified under the genus Lecanicillium before 2017, but Akanthomyces has been described earlier and has taxonomic priority.

Akanthomyces is related to the genera Beauveria and Cordyceps. It can be distinguished by morphological features like the structure of the perithecia, as well as by the DNA structure.

Type species: Akanthomyces aculeatus

Synonym
