Aedes simpsoni (Theobald, 1905)

This mosquito is found in sub-Saharan Africa, where it often breeds in leaf-axils of bananas or coconut palms, but also in artificial containers. It feeds on mammals, including humans, and is regarded as a vector of several medically important virus diseases like yellow fever, chikungunya or the Bunyamwera virus (Mutisya et al., 2021).

A. simpsoni is part of a complex of closely related species which is referred to as Aedes simpsoni s.l.. This complex is composed of Aedes simpsoni s.s., Aedes lilii and Aedes bromeliae. Members of this complex cannot be separated reliably by morphological characters.
