Abstract: Dirsh (1974) synonymised 27 nominal taxa with Schistocerca americana (Drury), which he divided into 11 subspecies. A reclassification of the group is presented, based on the experimental study of live cultures. Five species are recognised : S. americana, S. serialis, S. piceifrons, S. cancellata and S. gregaria. S. pallens is considered as a member of the same species complex, and three nominal taxa, synonymised by Dirsh with S. americana, are excluded from it.

Dirsh (1974) a considéré 27 taxa nominaux comme étant des synonymes de Schistocerca americana (Drury), espèce qu'il a divisée en 11 sous-espèces. Une nouvelle classification du groupe est présentée sur la base de l'étude expérimentale de populations de laboratoire. Cinq espèces sont reconnues : S. americana, S. serialis, S. piceifrons, S. cancellata et S. gregaria: S. pallens est considéré comme faisant partie du même complexe spécifique, dont sont exclus trois taxa nominaux, considérés par Dirsh comme synonymes de S. americana.
