Schistocerca piceifrons (Walker, 1870) - (Central American locust)

The locust is a serious pest in central and northern South America, causing outbreaks and plagues if conditions are suitable for it to enter the gregarious phase and form swarms. It damages many crops, but prefers rice, wheat, maize, palms and citrus.

The development from egg, through 5-6 nymphal stages to the adult stage lasts around 3 months. The adults may remain reproductively immature and until temperatures raise above 20°C. The locust typically completes 2 generations per year.
