Cynodon Rich. in Pers. 1805 - (bermudagrasses)

This genus of grasses contains around 10 species which are found in tropical and subtropical regions. Cynodon dactylon or its hybrid Cynodon dactylon × C. transvaalensis is often grown as turf, but is also a weed in other types of turf and in many crops like soybean, sugarcane or cotton.

The plants are characterized by growing long, above-ground rhizomes. The inflorescences contain 3-6 spikes, emerging from the same point at the end of the stem and each containing 2 rows of stalkless and narrowly spaced spikelets.
