Globodera Skarbilovich, 1959 - (potato cyst nematodes)
This genus of cyst nematodes contains more than 10 species which mainly infest the roots of solanaceous plants like potatoes, tomatoes or eggplants. They can reach high densities and result in serious crop losses. Economically the most important species are Globodera pallida and Globodera rostochiensis. Other important species of nematodes infesting solanaceous crops belong to the genus Meloidogyne like Meloidogyne chitwoodi or Meloidogyne incognita.
The species of Globodera are common in temperate regions. They form round cysts that harden and can persist in the soil for more than 10 years. It is believed that several species have originated in South America and have been accidentally introduced into other regions. There are quarantine regulations in many countries which try to prevent the spread of these species.
