Oligonychus ilicis (McGregor, 1917) - (southern red mite)

This polyphagous spider mite is widely distributed in warmer regions. Among the crops infested are coffee, ornamentals, strawberry or blueberry. Severe infestations have been reported from some crops, resulting in yield losses of more than 50%.

The mites feed on the lower as well as the upper leaf surfaces, sucking out the content of the cells and causing bronzed-colored leaves. O. ilicis can complete one generation within two weeks under suitable environmental conditions.
