Apera spica-venti (weed) (L.) P. Beauv. - (common windgrass)

This grass weed is common in northern and central parts of Europe. It is also found in surrounding regions and has spread to North America. The weed can become a serious problem in cereals like winter wheat, reducing yield and quality. In northern Europe, it is regarded as one of the most important weeds in winter cereals. Management by herbicides can be difficult due to the presence of herbicide resistance.

The grass can grow to a height of more than 1 m and a single plant can produce up to 10,000 seeds which germinate in late summer and autumn. The seeds drop to the ground close to the mother plant, usually before the cereal harvest. However, they can spread longer distances with farm vehicles.
