Dactylonectria macrodidyma (Halleen, Schroers & Crous) L. Lombard & Crous 2014
The fungus is widespread and associated with black foot disease of grapevine. Other crops (as well as weeds) can also become infected. On grapevine, the fungus causes necrotic vascular lesions on the trunk and roots, general decline and reduced vigor. Black foot disease of grapevine has been associated with various other fungi as well and is characterized by symptoms resembling drought stress, stunting and necrotic lesions in the wood of the trunk and can result in death of the vine.
D. macrodidyma forms small, dark red, sexual perithecia (about 200 µm large) which produce ascospores, approximately 12-18 x 4 µm in size, as well as asexual conidia. The conidia may be relatively small (microconidia, 6 x 4 µm) or larger, straight, cylindrical and 1-3 septate (macroconidia, 20-40 x 5-6 μm). The formation of chlamydospores has been also described.
