Alternanthera philoxeroides (weed) (Mart.) Griseb. - (alligatorweed)
This herbaceous weed can be terrestial, amphibious or aquatic and is native to South America. It has been introduced into North America in the late 1800's and into various other regions of the world. It can form dense monocultures along the shores of fresh water bodies. The plants are rooted at the shoreline and can grow metres into the open water.
Herbicides have been used for management and several biological control agents have been successfully established in invaded countries.
