Anopheles arabiensis Patton, 1905
The mosquito is one of the main vectors of human malaria in some parts of Africa, e.g. eastern Africa. It is externally indistinguishable from Anopheles gambiae and needs to be identified by PCR analysis. It is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa and breeds in various natural and man-made water accumulations, even in temporary pools or in polluted water.
It readily feeds on humans but has also a strong association with cattle, one of its main hosts (e.g. see Fritz et al. 2013). Insecticide-treated bed-nets are still the preferred control method, although insecticide resistance is an increasing problem. The life cycle is dependent on temperature and the immature development will be completed in less than 2 weeks under tropical conditions.
