This termite infests wooden structures and forest trees in China. It has been also recorded from India. The moisture level of infested timber may be low ([[Acta Entomologica Sinica (1996) 39, 375-382|Li et al., 1996]]). Nests are build in the soil and in the xylem of living old trees. ''R. chinensis'' is closely related to ''[[Reticulitermes flavipes]]'' and both species might hybridise.
