|Publication abstract=Single gene traits can be easier transferred to other plants than traits mediated by multiple genes. A possible risk szenario for the transfer of plant characteristics like virus resistance from transgenic plants is the development of more competitive wild plants or the feralization of crop plants. As the expression of transgenes depends on the genetic background, outcrossing to other plants implies possible changes of the expression pattern including gene inactivation. Accompanying to a field release of genetically modified virus resistant and herbicide resistant sugar beet plants we therefore performed manual crosses with wild beets and with mangel beet in order to investigate the expression of the introduced transgenes and the level of resistance to the rizomania virus under green house as well as under field conditions. Under greenhouse conditions F<sub>1</sub> hybrids of mangel beet x sugar beet had transgene expression levels similar to those of.the transgenic parent lines with the exception of an inactivation of the ''cp'' gene expression in 2 of 43 mangel beet x L4 hybrids. In contrast, about half of the F<sub>2</sub> hybrids investigated under field conditions, showed severe reduction of ''cp'' gene expression at both field sites at one sampling date. This reduction was correlated with a high sun light intensity on the days before and during sampling. The results emphasize the importance of field release experiments for the assessment of transgenic plants and their progeny.
