The family contains around 150 species of shrubs, trees and herbs that often grow in arid and semi-arid regions. Several trees are important timber sources, however some species are agricultural weeds like puncturevine, Tribulus terrestris, and African rue, Peganum harmala.
The nodes along the branches are often swollen. The leaves are simple and usually arranged in pairs. They are often fleshy and evergreen. The flowers typically have 5 petals with a radial symmetry.
