Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV)
The virus is an important, wide-spread pathogen of cucurbit crops which has caused serious epidemics. Yield losses of up to 95% have been reported and infected plants typically stop producing marketable fruits within 2 weeks after they become infected. The virus causes mosaic symptoms, stunting and characteristic deformations on leaves (the leaves are fern-like with the blades barely developed) and fruits (with a knobby surface). Particularly pumpkin, melon and watermelon are often infected.
It is transmitted in a non-persistent manner by various aphid species like Myzus persicae or Aphis gossypii. Seed transmission is also suspected. The particles are flexuous rods, 750 nm long. The genome consists of single stranded RNA, about 9.6 kb large.
Management involves the use of resistant cultivars and sanitation, removal of infected plants and any volunteer cucurbit crops. Control of the aphid vectors is usually not considered to be effective.
