Yam mosaic virus (YMV)
This virus causes an important disease of Dioscorea species (yam) in western Africa with yield reductions of up to 40%. Yam is always propagated through pieces of tubers or cuttings which promotes the spread of the disease. Therefore, the use of virus-free planting material is the most effective control method. Aphids can also transmit the disease.
Symptoms vary, depending on the yam species and cultivars. Most commonly, yellow and green mosaic symptoms occur on the leaves and plants are stunted. Symptoms may disappear after some time and such latent infections can still result in poor growth of the plants.
