Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky, 1866) - (Asian ambrosia beetle)

The beetle is native to tropical Asia and has spread to various other regions. It has been recorded in southern North America and Africa since the 1970s. It was subsequently found in Central America (since 1996), Italy (first record 2003) and South America (first record in Brazil in 2012). It breeds in the stems of various trees and shrubs and can be a significant pest in nurseries. It is a relatively large species of ambrosia beetle. The female are 2-3 mm long and dark reddish brown.
