Turnip yellows virus (TuYV)
This virus is common on rape/canola in Europe, causing severe yield losses of up to 50%. It is also found in other regions and infects other crops, mainly from the family Brassicaceae. It is transmitted by aphids like Myzus persicae in a persistent, but non-circulative manner. More than 50% of P. persicae aphids might carry the virus, and transmission rates of over 90% have been recorded.
Infected plants may show a variety of symptoms like interveinal chlorosis, stunting, reddening of leaves, etiolation or poor root development. The symptoms might be similar to nutrient deficiencies. Management relies mainly on pesticides to control aphids. Only one resistance gene is known which gives partial resistance. Before 1997, this virus was considered to be a non-beet infecting variety of Beet western yellows virus.
