Trichopoda pennipes (parasitoid) (Fabricius, 1781)

This tachinid fly is a parasitoid of stink bugs in the Americas. It has been also introduced into Hawaii in 1962 against Nezara viridula and has been recorded from Italy since the 1990s, apparently an accidental introduction. Apart from Nezara it also parasitises other stinkbugs in North America, including the invasive brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys).

The adult flies feed on nectar and females lay eggs singly on late instar nymphs or on adult stink bugs. The hatching fly larva bores into the bug, develops inside the bug and exits as mature larva ready to pupate. There may be up to 3 generations per year.
