Triatoma brasiliensis Neiva 1911
The bug is an important vector of the Chagas disease in South America. It is common in some areas of north-eastern Brazil. Originally, it was apparently restricted to sylvatic habitats, but also invades and establishes itself in peridomestic and domestic environments. Apart from humans, it feeds on various domestic animals like dogs, chicken and goats.
Two subspecies of T. brasiliensis and several closely related species are together considered to form a species complex (see Costa et al., 2013).
